Independent speciality coffee roasters specialising in responsibly sourced, exceptional and often unconventional speciality coffees from across the world.

Our Story

The journey of Sunday Coffee Roasters began back in 2014, when my friend and I started a speciality coffee shop in Portsmouth called Canvas Coffee.  In the coffee shop we wanted to share some really exciting coffees from different roasters from across the world, so we began showcasing / guesting coffees from different roasters every couple of weeks.

Sometimes we'd get some really amazing tasting coffees which our customers loved, but sometimes we got some fairly boring, flat and unexciting coffees that just didn't taste as good as the samples we tried.

At the beginning we thought it was down to our lack of experience as baristas, but after a while we started to get this sense that maybe it wasn't us..

I got curious and decided to go and do some courses on coffee roasting!

First was an SCAE Foundation in Coffee Roasting (now called SCA), then a 3 day course and later an intimate workshop with the person who wrote the book on coffee roasting - Scott Rao.

In 2015 I bought a small 2.4kg roaster, which we called Tony (after Tony the tiger) and began roasting when the coffee shop was closed - on a Sunday!  This is where our name came from but it was also a bit of a joke on Sunday Roast – our Logo back then was a coffee bean that looked like a roast dinner!

After 37kilos of practice I finally had some coffee we really liked the taste of, so began selling it at the café… we kept being asked by our customers we finally set up an online store.

2025 will mark 10 years since Sunday Coffee Roasters began, the hobby has grown a fair bit, we outgrew the 2.4kg roaster and for 2.5 years between 2019-2022 began ‘Slot Roasting’ at Pharmacie Coffee Roasters in Brighton on a much larger 15kg Giesen Roaster.

Since 2022 we have been roasting on a Probat and are based in The Old Chicken Shed behind Southbourne Farm Shop on the border of West Sussex and Hampshire

You can buy our coffee online here and we are stocked at a number of local and independent businesses and speciality coffee shops and a cafes.

About the Roaster

Hi, I’m Pravin, the roaster behind Sunday Coffee Roasters.

I first started working in coffee in 2013/14 when I opened a speciality coffee shop and social enterprise Portsmouth called Canvas Coffee

On the surface Canvas was simply a great coffee shop but behind the scenes the café was used to help people in early recovery from addiction develop skills and confidence to take the next steps in their lives through volunteer opportunities and barista skills training courses. Sunday Coffee Roasters was started out of the coffee shop when we were closed on Sundays.

Sourcing Philosophy

I am passionate about coffee and impact led business. I firmly believe that businesses that have impact will change the world.

This is reflected in the sourcing practices we keep at the roastery.

The majority of the coffee we source at Sunday is through other impact focussed businesses.

Something we also do these days is only buy coffee through people we have direct relationships with and know personally.

This can make things a bit slower but I personally want to know who we are buying coffee from and be sure there is shared values, trust and an ongoing relationship where we can buy long term*

Where possible I travel as often as I can visiting different origins meeting producers and learning about where the coffee comes from, how it is harvested, processed and exported.

Travelling and meeting the people who produce the coffee we roast also allows us to stay in touch with and understand the hard work and challenges faced by those producing the coffee we get enjoy.

*Life is too short and I am simply not interested in buying coffee logging into an portal.

Coffee Education

I am passionate about what I do and try to do things properly following best practice and keeping on top of my learning. Over the years I have poured my heart into my own coffee education - learning as much as I can about coffee. Some of the highlights are as follows:

  • SCAE Foundation Level in Roasting Skills (August 2015)

  • 3 day "How to Start a Roastery" course at London School of Coffee (August 2015)

  • In October 2024 I attended a Fermentation Training Camp in Kenya with Lucia Solis

  • I have visited the following coffee producing countries, Mexico, Kenya and Colombia (2 times)

I have mostly followed one particular individual (Scott Rao) who was really the first person to write the books on coffee roasting and also has written many other books on coffee.

The majority of my roasting education has been under Scott Rao:

  • Scott Rao Small Group Roasting Workshop at Prufrock Course (2016)

  • Berlin Masterclass (2019)

  • Beginners' Online Roasting Class and Coaching Group (April 2020)

  • All-Levels Online Roasting Course (October 2021)

  • I was a guest at his Advanced Masterclass in Milan (July 2022)

  • London Roasting Seminar (July 2024)

  • Ongoing consulting since 2015

  • Scott visited and spent the day with us in (June 2022)

Roasting Style

I currently roast on a Probat P5II - it is a Gas roaster that runs off of Propane

I would describe my roasting style as a roaster who prefers a gas roaster and uses a traditional roasting style but use technology where it makes sense.

An example - is that I log all my roasts using Cropster roast logging software

I however am not interested in automation and roast ‘manually’

I believe there is something in the craft of roasting that comes with education, experience, understanding and through tasting ‘cupping’ constantly.

I know my roaster very well and calibrated it myself with Scott Rao and it is serviced regularly by Malcolm.

We encountered many issues getting the roaster set up.

Overcoming all of the obstacles has given me a confidence in understanding roasting and my roaster in a way that I didn’t have before.
