(NEW) Fugi Youth Group, Rwanda - Washed
This is the second coffee we have bought that comes from Fugi Washing Station.
The first was a Natural Women’s Produced coffee from the 22/23 harvest that came by recommendation from our friend Tash at Sucafina.
Fugi washing station is named after the hill upon which it stands, at 1,550 meters above sea level. Baho Coffee Company (the exporters) purchased the station in 2016. Since then, Baho’s team of agronomist station managers have been working with farmers to teach Good Agricultural Practices, improve farmers’ access to inputs and produce the best cherry possible.
The youth group at Fugi washing station was founded because young adults in the area were attracted to coffee farming after seeing how successful their parents and neighbours were. Emmanuel Rutasira - the founder and owner of Baho Coffee - told these young people to ask their parents for a portion of land to manage or to have their parents confirm that they would be inheriting the farm and started a special program for young farmers in Nyarunguru. Emmanuel gave them free seeds to start their own coffee farms and after 3 years they began delivering their cherry to Fugi washing station. “They are motivated and they are paid well for their good work,” Emmanuel says. The group is comprised of 37 farmers who are around 30 years old.
We cupped this coffee blind alongside many other Rwandan coffees this coffee stood out from the 23/24 harvest.
