(NEW) Yuu-Chula, Mexico
Yuu-Chula is produced by Rebeca Chávez Martínez and Felipe Vega Altamirano, a married couple who farm 3.5 hectares in Santo Domingo Cacalotepec, in the Sierra Norte region of Oaxaca. Rebeca and Felipe met in the United States, where both were searching for a better future — but missing their families and homeland, they eventually decided to return to Mexico. With the money they had saved, they purchased plots of land with coffee plants and built their farm from the ground up.
Rebeca comes from a coffee-growing family — her mother still harvests her own coffee to this day — but she had very little knowledge of the process herself. She says that was actually a good thing, because she had no bad habits to unlearn and was able to learn selective harvesting and controlled processing from the very beginning. Her husband Felipe shares a deep passion for fermentation and the mountains. It's truly his vocation.
Some of you will remember Cacalotepec, the community microlot we stocked for two years running. Yuu-Chula comes from farmers in the same region, but this is a family farm rather than a community blend — and it's imported by Evie at Que Onda, who many of you met at the coffee tasting in Southsea last May.
I'm especially excited about this coffee because we visited Santo Domingo Cacalotepec in 2024 and it’s the most remote area i’ve visited.
What I really love about this coffee is the profile — notes of Plum, Brown Sugar, and Vanilla. It's a tasty washed Mexican coffee with a really clean cup and lovely sweetness.
